In the last ten years, I have had the opportunity to photograph several dance festivals. Over those events, I have discovered a difficulty with photographing modern dance – modern dancers are less likely to perform a particular jump at a particular time in the musical score; their movement is often more like a twisting stream than a waterfall. As I watched the various performances at Side Street’s Going Dutch Festival this past November, I realized that a long exposure could reflect the beauty of the performer’s dance and expression; as short as a tenth of a second up to a full second of exposure.

And while some movement still seems to require the “moment in time” capture, I really like how these images reflect the movement and passion of these artists.

Back in 2023, I wanted to photograph the 4th of July fireworks, but not from the normal location on Chicago Street. So I found this little hole in the trees along the river. I nearly dropped my camera and tripod into the water because the hill was steep, but I really like the uniqueness of the photos.

One of my photographer friends has taken images that are similar to this concept; what happens if you photograph while the crossing guards close? But at the Metra crossing at National Street, you have additional options – what if you merge traffic, train, casino boat, and crossing guard?

I always want for my next photo to be better than the last image; a better composition or representation, or maybe a different, unique view. I’ve photographed fireworks many times, and I’ve seen some fantastic ideas using zoom and focus that I’d love to try…but what if I took my idea from Christmas lights – spinning the camera during the exposure – and tried it during a longer exposure of fireworks?

I’ve long wanted to capture an aircraft that is traversing the moon, but have not taken the time (or patience) to plan for that photo.  But the other night when I was walking into the house, I watched an aircraft nearly pass in front of the moon.  The resulting photo is not my best image of an airplane or of the moon, but I find the motion blur to add to the image.

Taking photos of a fire is an incredibly flexible, you can take very quick photos, photos with movement, or anything in between.  But if you capture very quick photos, you just might see a dragon!

Our human sense of scale is often inadequate for what is around us; that tugboat is huge, longer than a semi truck. But that tugboat pales in comparison to even the small “lake” that it’s floating in, Lake Union.

This was an interesting concept, but poor execution. The idea was that the sparks from the steel wool would look like they were coming out of the tailpipe, but – well, you gotta have your angles right. And since that’s me spinning the steel wool, well, my camera angle was all wrong. Oh well, I still think it’s a cool shot of Keith on his bike.

Over the past 10 years, the Elgin Area Camera Club has hosted a steel wool photography opportunity three times. This image is from our most recent outing, and I’m actually the one who is spinning the wool in this image – I set up my camera and someone else pushed the shutter, so this is more of a collaborative image, you might say.

I’ve captured Elgin’s fireworks shows from the Chicago Street bridge a few times (link to the most recent set of photos), so last year I wanted to photograph them from a different viewpoint. We parked near the riverwalk and then walked just north of the Highway 20 bridge. I never posted the resulting images since I’d just come back from my July waterfall trip (link); however, this image definitely works to celebrate the New Year!
